Black Lines Drinks

I have been sitting on this project for a while so it’s about time I shared it as I am super proud by how it turned out!

I connected with Black Lines through a mutual friend a few years ago, they were after a set of product renders for their ecommerce page. I had always wanted to work on product model gig as I rarely get the opportunity to model something with a real life reference sent to me. In this case, it was many, many negroni’s.

I’m a huge fan of the company after discovering them, not only for their kickass cocktails but their brand ethos, often running promotions and giving proceeds to various charities and their branding and illustration, working with many graphic designers and having all their information written on the bottles. There’s just a level of individual consciousness here that you don’t see in other companies. Big love BL <3

Previously, all the images they had were photographs in a studio. A few disadvantages of this were; slight irregularities in position, lighting and hand cut out transparency. The setup time and cost of printing out a new bottle label, taking it to a dedicated studio and photographing it.

Whereas now, after the initial time spent modelling all the collection (roughly 40 hours), they can just send over a pdf of a new label and I can render it out with identical positioning, lighting etc.. This also helps with visualising new designs without the need to print.

Modelling Process

After receiving the bottles in the post, I photographed them in a make shift studio with a high focal length to flatten the bottles so it gives a more defined profile to create a spline outline.

I offset the spline to give the bottle an inner thickness so it wasn’t just a solid object, then stuck it in a lathe object and bobs your uncle, a bottle.

Added the label, liquid and other details and after many hours of micro tweaking they were happy with the end result. Big win :)

I did a similar process for the 750 ML bottles.

I did timelapse the process of creating the 500ml bottles but the file corrupted sadly.

One thing I was super happy about with this project is I was able to implement the ACES colour workflow to the renders. It really elevated the final output, making the images seem much more realistic lighting wise.

One thing I would improve on now, would be to add caustic reflections from the coloured liquid onto the floor. Octane render has just recently added this feature so that would elevate the piece even higher.
